Plan B

After risking life and limb on the Hurricane Ridge Road in the rain and clouds, we continued to head east on highway 101 (that just sounds so wrong to me, east on highway 101) for 18 miles to Sequim Bay State Park to regroup and adjust our plans.

My original loosely constructed plans included taking the ferry to Victoria (as a walk on) to explore that beautiful city.  Then we were going to take the RV across the Puget Sound on the ferry and continue to the North Cascades National Park.  While chatting with the rangers at the Olympic Visitor’s Center we discovered that the road to North Cascades Park is still closed for the season and probably will not open until late May.  Bummer.

But we still have Victoria.  We found a ferry schedule for the Port Angeles-Victoria run and at this time of year there are very limited crossings.  The morning ferry leaves at 8:20 and we had two options to return, 10:30 am or 4:00 pm.  Obviously the 10:30 return was a no go.  If we took the 4pm ferry with a 90 minute crossing time we would not be back until 5:30 pm.  That was way too long to leave Marley in the RV,

so scratch Victoria off the list.  Now what?

After extensive deliberation,

we decided to continue around the Olympic Peninsula to I-5 and head southeast to visit Mount Rainer National Park and begin our trek home (sigh).  In the meantime, I will leave you with some pictures of the Sequim Bay area.

Today's 3 Fun Facts:

  1. The Sequim area lies in the rainshadow of the Olympic Mountains and receives less than half of the yearly rainfall of other Puget Sound locations.
  2. Sequim is a native word meaning "quiet waters".
  3. April-May can be an unpredictable month to travel.
